"If you refuse," Sect Leader Ling continued with a calm expression. "I am planning to hand the task to that Shan boy. His cultivation has improved leaps and bounds lately."     

Lu Yizhou clenched his fists under the table until his knuckles turned white. No. Fucking. Way. He wouldn't let the male protagonist get close to Heimo. Taking in a breath, Lu Yizhou tried to add a hint of reluctance to his tone so as to mask his eagerness. "This disciple will accept it."     

"Good." Sect Leader Ling harrumphed in satisfaction. "I know you will not disappoint me."      

Lu Yizhou contemplated how to word the sentence so as to gauge the past connection between Heimo and Sect Leader Ling but it turned out he didn't need to do that. Sect Leader Ling divulged it by himself in the next second. It seemed like the talk of Jingxue-Jun being his confidant was true. Lu Yizhou only hoped that this world's Jingxue-Jun wasn't involved in whatever deed Sect Leader Ling had done otherwise… how could he face Heimo again knowing that he was one of the people who had harmed him? Well, technically it wasn't Lu Yizhou who had done that but he was Jingxue-Jun now and Jingxue-Jun's mess was Lu Yizhou's mess to solve.     

"Our people suspect that Heimo is up to no good again. Killing an immortal, using demonic cultivation to thrive…" Sect Leader Ling sighed. "At first, I expected him to stay low and know his place after I executed two of his people but it seems like I am wrong."     

Lu Yizhou's heart thudded in his chest. Two people. According to what he had heard from Heimo's conversation with his Shijie, it seemed like they had just lost their parents recently. Lu Yizhou's features hardened and he slowly let out an exhale. No wonder… No wonder that…     

"It seems like those two people are more important to Heimo than I assumed they were." Of course, Lu Yizhou shimmered in anger, Sect Leader Ling had just killed his parents. Of course Heimo would want to take revenge. Of course he would want to kill Lu Yizhou. If Lu Yizhou were in his position, he would also— "I don't expect you to understand my decision, Yizhou. "Lu Yizhou!" Sect Leader Ling slammed his palm onto the table and the marble surface cracked under the force. "Do you wish to wait until a major accident happens so that you can be convinced?!"     

Major accident. Jingxue-Jun's death, his mind supplied. Jingxue-Jun was supposed to die, breaking the fragile equilibrium between the righteous and demonic cultivators. That was according to the plot. But that wasn't the whole truth. Underneath that peace, it was Lingyan, these righteous cultivators, who decided to take the matter into their own hands and uphold Heavenly Law onto those innocent people. Hatred bred vengeance, blood repaid by blood. The war had no one to blame except themselves.     

Heimo wasn't the villain. He was just someone who was trying to protect those who were precious to him. But in this world where the righteous dominated and honorable to the civilians' eyes, he became the villain for fighting a way to survive.     

Ha… Lu Yizhou couldn't help but laugh inwardly. What to do? He really wished to eliminate these people who wanted to harm Heimo, starting from this one in front of him.

The corner of Lu Yizhou's mouth twitched. The fury that boiled his blood slightly diminished because of the system's sudden notification and 666's excited cheers.      

That was close, he sighed. He almost threw all caution to the wind and fought Sect Leader Ling right there and then. Who knows, maybe he could replace the man as the new Sect Leader. Hmm, it wouldn't be a bad idea. The only downside was that he had to bear the female protagonist's ire and if she cornered him into a duel, he wouldn't be able to get rid of her. That would be a pain in the ass, even more if the male protagonist decided to join the fight and the whole mess ended up involving Heimo. No, he couldn't let that happen. He took it back, killing Sect Leader Ling wouldn't be a good option as of now.     

"Are you listening to me, Lu Yizhou?!" Sect Leader Ling's bellow brought Lu Yizhou out of his thoughts and he masked his annoyance with a brief nod. Just for a while, he would let Sect Leader Ling live a bit longer. Sect Leader Ling pinched his brows with an exasperated look. "Go. This old man needs to have a rest."      

There was nothing Lu Yizhou wanted more than that. He stood up readily, paid his respect and walked away. He had just taken two steps when Sect Leader Ling inquired, "You will confirm Heimo Qixue's death with your own eyes, won't you?"     

Lu Yizhou's jaws tightened and he forced out a light grunt from his throat. Whether it was a yes or no, only he knew.
