Extra 18: It's time to d-d-d-d-duel (6)

2"Well, it's a pleasure to work as your new teacher" - said Kurama while glancing at Banner, who only nodded, as if he was telling him to take control - "As you already know, I will be your new teacher in the area of combos."     1

"Professor, I don't think your presence is necessary, we already know how to do a combo" - said a grayish black haired boy while looking disdainfully at Kurama.

"What's your name?" - Kurama asked as he raised an eyebrow.

"My name is Chazz Princetone" - replied the now known as Chazz, not noticing how all the girls looked at him with hostility.

"Ok, I understand what you're trying to say, though I wish you would only speak when I ask a question" - Kurama said as he frowned slightly - "No matter how close in age we are, right now I'm your teacher..."

Chazz tried to say something else, though a single glare from Kurama shut him up.

"As for your words, they are correct, each of you knows how to do a simple combo, though I didn't come to teach you how to do a basic combo, but to think beyond your first move" - Kurama added while typing on the computer the teachers used to control the projector and put the images of a few cards - "As you know, a combo is a basic mechanic in the duel monsters, which consists of making precise moves, one after the other in order to create an established field solid enough to give you the advantage to win the duel, or perform an OTK (One Turn Kill) on your opponent. As for what I will teach you is to think of more than just a basic combo."

"What do you mean?" - Alexis asked as she raised a hand.

"You are?" - Kurama asked as he looked at the beautiful blonde girl.

"Sorry, my name is Alexis Rhodes" - replied Alexis with slight embarrassment.

"I'm going to ask you the same thing as Mr. Princetone, Miss Rhodes, please ask permission before you speak" - replied Kurama as he shook his head - "It doesn't matter if you are a pretty girl, or a scruffy boy, it doesn't matter if you are blue, or red, everyone here is going to get the same treatment, Ok?"

Alexis blushed slightly before nodding, though she wasn't upset about being reprimanded, in fact, she was surprised that Kurama treated her so normally.

"As for your question, I want you to answer me something" - Kurama said while looking at Alexis - "Do you have a preset combo? Oh, and I'm not asking you to tell me which one, I just want you to answer me with a yes or no."

"Yes" - nodded Alexis calmly.

"Ok, now I want to ask you another question... Is that combo the one you always use in your duels?" - Kurama asked seriously.

Alexis was silent for a few seconds before nodding again.

"That's what I mean, normally, you guys possess pre-set combos, combos that you are used in all situations" - said Kurama while shaking his head - "What I'm going to teach you, is simply to expand your options and help you adapt to situations that would normally defeat you..."

The boys looked at each other

"Mister Yuki, tell me, what archetype do you use as a deck?" - Kurama asked as he raised an eyebrow.

"Elemental Heroes" - Jaden answered honestly.

"Ok, let's take for example Mr. Yuki, his Elemental Heroes Deck is versatile and can adapt to many situations, although there is a small problem, and that is that it is extremely dependent on his extra deck and his ability to Fusion" - said Kurama seriously - "The moment we block his Fusion ability, his Deck practically falls apart or becomes a simple brick."

Jaden frowned when he heard this, though he had to admit it was true.

"Like I said, Yuki-san has a basic combo already preset, and while he's strong, he has a huge problem, and that's that he's dependent on [Polymerization]" - Kurama said seriously - "The moment someone uses a card like [Prohibition], his whole strategy goes down the toilet."

"Now, you guys should be asking yourselves, how could you fix this?" - Kurama asked as he looked around.

"With another type of combos?" - Syrus answered fearfully because he didn't know if his answer was right or wrong.

"And how could you do that with an archetype as rigid as the [Elemental Heroes]?" - Kurama asked as he looked at Jaden, who could only frown.

"With an engine that complements those cards" - replied Alexis as she looked at the professor - "Maybe a [Warrior] engine, or with a fusion engine like the [Invoked] engine?"

"Exactly, although it can also be with new cards of the same archetype" - Kurama added while looking at the surprised Jaden - "Pegasus is about to release a new expansion for [Elemental Heroes], which make them more consistent and covers many of their problems, as for the decks that don't have add-ons, they can use engines to be able to expand their opportunities to perform combos."

The students were writing down everything the young white-haired man was saying.

"Now back to the initial problem" - Kurama said as he took a deck, one he had put together for the classes and put it on the projector, so the students could see it.

"Sky Striker?" - Alexis said in surprise as she saw this card she hadn't seen before.

"Yes, it's a new archetype that Pegasus sent me to try out" - replied Kurama calmly - "This archetype is being the first of a new era for Duel Monsters."

"New era?" - repeated the students curiously.

"Yes, this archetype is currently unique, they have a summoning method never seen before" - replied Kurama as he put on the projector a monster card, which showed a cute white-haired girl.

"Extra Monster Zone?" - Alexis said with surprise because she wasn't expecting something that term.

"I think I'd better demonstrate it in game, so you understand..." - Kurama said as he looked at Jaden - "Well, now you'll get the duel you wanted."

"Great!" - Jaden exclaimed with excitement.

"Let's go..." - Kurama said as he motioned everyone to follow him.

The students were excited because they would be seeing an elite duelist fight for the first time live, and what was better, Kurama was about to reveal a new game mechanic.

"Ready?" - Kurama asked as he looked at his student.

"Ready!" - Jaden exclaimed excitedly.

"Ok, you can start" - said Kurama calmly.

"Ok, it's time to turn on my game!" - Jaden exclaimed excitedly - "Draw! Perfect! I summon [Elemental Hero Clayman] in defense mode!"

"Wait, why are you sending a Magic card to the Graveyard?" - Jaden asked with a frown.

Kurama just smiled - "You'll see in a bit, now, I activate the magic card [Graceful Charity], which lets me draw 3 cards, though I have to discard two."

"Okay, now I summon my [Sky Striker Ace - Raye] in attack mode, though he won't be around for long" - Kurama said as his eyes glittered slightly - "Appear! Summon link, [Sky Striker Ace - Kagari]!"

"Link summoning!" - Jaden exclaimed in surprise.

The students were also watching silently as they waited for the new summoning.

In front of everyone, a familiar monster appeared, it was Raye, only she was now wearing an imposing futuristic red armor.

"Wait, that monster has no defense!" - Syrus exclaimed when he saw the stats on the card.

"Link monsters, don't possess defense, so they can't change their battle position, they can't flip face down either" - replied Kurama calmly.
